The motto of the ancient Greek Achilles sums up the aim of our Classics Department:

Nihil Nisi Optimum!

that is, to always be our best!

The two crucial elements of this aim are:

  • Enjoyment
We study some of the most fascinating aspects of Greece and Rome. We learn about some of the most interesting people who have walked this earth, from poets and playwrights to politicians and power-brokers. We constantly aim to spot the links with our own culture of today and, not least, enjoy the rhythm and power of iconic Greek and Latin phrases!
  • Critical Thinking
We learn to question and evaluate the social, moral, religious and political values of the Greeks and Romans. We regularly compare with our own era, to enhance a critical understanding of issues as important then as in our own times
