The motto of the ancient Greek Achilles sums up the aim of our Classics Department:

Nihil Nisi Optimum!

that is, to always be our best!

The two crucial elements of this aim are:

  • Enjoyment
We study some of the most fascinating aspects of Greece and Rome. We learn about some of the most interesting people who have walked this earth, from poets and playwrights to politicians and power-brokers. We constantly aim to spot the links with our own culture of today and, not least, learn the Latin language!
  • Critical Thinking
We learn to question and evaluate the social, moral, religious and political values of the Greeks and Romans. We aim to develop a critical eye for the literary techniques employed by ancient writers, especially the importance of rhetoric. We develop a clear understanding of how language works through the study of Latin grammar and syntax.
