The Learning Support Department works with staff, students, and parents to help maximise students’ achievements and to support progress. Demonstrating our School Virtues in action, we take pride in the impact that we have in the lives of our young people and in helping them to break barriers and reach their full potential.
Learning Support at Campion is led by Miss Giesen (SENDCo) and a dedicated team of HLTA’s and LSA’s. We have a dedicated base in Campion House and are continually looking to improve how we support our pupils and increase our offer.
All students have the right to an education which is appropriate to them as individuals. Therefore, it is our aim to provide high quality support to ensure that all students are included and make progress; as well as minimising the difficulties that some students will experience. Student progress is monitored through the assessment procedure which is in place for all students.
We aim to achieve this by adopting three principles that are essential to developing a more inclusive curriculum.
Three Principles for Inclusion
Setting suitable learning challenges - We aim to give every student the opportunity to experience success in learning and to achieve as high a standard as possible.
Responding to students’ diverse learning needs - We take into account the different backgrounds, experiences, interests and strengths which influence the way in which students learn when we plan our approaches to teaching and learning.
Overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of students - We recognise that a minority of students will have particular learning and assessment requirements that will create barriers to learning, if we do not address them through special arrangements.
It is also important we:
Listen to students’ opinions, questions and anxieties
Employ positive marking techniques
Recognise, celebrate and reward progress however small
Be consistent and fair to all students
Enable students to make choices and decisions about their work so they feel valued
Encourage good relationships with students and recognise that mutual respect and trust are important

We have resourced a new sensory corner for when students need time to emotionally regulate and reset before returning to lessons. This area has been built in response to students' needs and will continue to develop. We have developed an offer menu and sensory circuits to suit all needs. Students return to lessons following their 5-10 minutes out and regulation.
This is an online Maths Intervention programme. Students are brought out from lessons (this is on a termly rota to avoid the same lesson being missed) for 15minutes 2-3 times a week. They work with an LSA to support them, and the programme is individually tailored. This Intervention is 1:1.
This is a 1:1 Intervention, where the HLTA tailors support the individual's needs. It is book-based support where students activate word recognition processes and language comprehension skills. Students are brought out from lessons (this is on a termly rota to avoid the same lesson being missed) for 15minutes.
The programme is designed to increase confidence in reading and literal comprehension; to increase their inferential comprehension and to increase awareness of paying attention to punctuation and spelling.
This is an online programme that supports students and creates a personalised learning journey to support building reading fluency and spelling. Students are encouraged to do an additional 3-4 sessions on this at home. It can show up to 12 months increase in reading age over a 3-month period.
Sessions are prepared by the Learning Support Team, with the aim of providing students with pre-teaching of key terms/vocabulary for the curriculum and with revision on topics for upcoming assessments.
The main aim of this intervention is to improve working memory through playing games. These include games for Visual, Verbal and Practical Memory
Sessions vary, but the aim is always to improve our social skills and interaction with others, whether through discussion, game playing, or community projects.
This group aims to improve seven essential life skills, focus and self-control, empathy and perspective, respect for diversity, critical thinking and self-directed and engaged learning; and communication skills (verbal, written and non-verbal. The first big project for our two groups ivovled the planning and preparing for and hosting a Christmas party – which was great fun for all involved and taught essential life skills.
Sessions aim to improve these three core literacy skills, through a range of subject areas and activities.
With the use of laptops for lessons and examinations becoming a normal way of working for many students, this aids their typing skills and therefore speed at which they can produce work.
We have bought this package for use on laptops, with the idea that students will use this as a normal way of working in lessons, at home, and in examinations. There is additional support available for using this from the Learning Support Department and a range of help videos on their website - https://cricksoft.com/docsplus/#dropdown

If you should require support with accessing information from school, or at a parents evening/meeting - such as an Interpreter or BSL signer please contact the SENDCo or SEND Admin well in advance of the meeting.
To see what support is available to you locally, have a look at London Borough of Havering Local Offer, which is signposted on this page.
There are many support networks available for parents of children with SEND, some of which we have signposted below

The Knowledge Organisers are designed by staff to support students learning. They each contain keywords, information and sequencing, as well as information for assessments. These are laid out by term and then by subject to support your son.
